David Roberts (1796–1864) was a Scottish painter best known for his stunning series of detailed lithograph prints that captured the essence of Egypt and the Near East. He created these works from sketches made during his extensive travels in the region between 1838 and 1840. His large oil paintings on similar themes helped establish him as a significant figure in Orientalist art. In 1841, he was elected as a Royal Academician, marking a high point in his career.
